Hematite in Islam
Hadid-i Sini (Hadid chini, Hadid THeen) coming from the Arabic (حديد صيني ) Hadeed “Iron” and Seeni “Chinese”. Hadid theen is believed to refer to the gemstone hematite. It is thought that Ali wore this gem for strength. Islamic lore cautions against wearing hematite constantly; instead it should be worn for protection when confronting a tyrant or an oppressor.
Hematite as a Stone
Hematite, an iron oxide, derives its name from the Greek word for blood, since it is red when sliced thinly or powdered. Hematite is one of very few gemstones with a metallic luster. Hematite is always opaque and is typically a blackish grey. When highly polished it can sometimes look like silver. Hematite is a remarkably dense material, with a specific gravity much higher than corundum or zircon.
Hematite in Metaphysical and Crystal Healing
Hematite is thought to stimulate the absorption of iron and in turn, improve the supply and circulation of oxygen in the body. Hematite is also used for the relief of fever and pain from cramps. It is considered to be a grounding stone that has a cooling and calming effect. Mentally, it is thought to help calm the mind and clear the way for enhanced focus and concentration. Hematite is also an important stone for Chinese 'feng shui'. In feng shui practice, hematite is used for its protective force and for its ability to energize its wearer. Overall, hematite is an excellent gemstone for mental, physical and spiritual healing.
